ORGANIST
Urbana United Methodist Church
The organist assists in leading and supporting congregational worship in our services, as well as
playing for weddings, funerals, and the high holy days of the Christian calendar.

Schedule & Compensation
We know that committing to every Sunday may not be possible, and we do not want that requirement to
keep the right person from applying. We are open to a range of arrangements, from a weekly
commitment to a lighter rotation of about once a month plus the major services of the Christian
calendar (Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Good Friday, Easter, and Pentecost, among
others).

Pay is flexible and will be worked out in conversation based on the arranged schedule and the
organist's experience, generally in the range of $150 to $250 per week for a full weekly
commitment, prorated for a lighter schedule. Weddings and funerals are compensated separately and
directly by the families requesting those services.

Talents & Abilities Desired
● Ability to accompany hymns to assist in congregational singing
● Ability to play preludes, postludes and other special selections to enhance the worship service
● Skills in reading music and knowledge in music theory with the willingness to improvise when
necessary
● Willingness to coordinate with the pastor, music directors, pianist, praise team, and choir as
services call for it
● Openness to learning and growing; formal training is a plus but not a requirement

Responsibilities
● Play organ for the services on the agreed schedule, whether weekly or rotational
● Play for major services on the Christian calendar as arranged in advance
● Play for weddings and funerals as engaged directly by the families requesting those services
● Coordinate with the music directors and/or pastor on music selection ahead of each service
● Be available, when possible, to accompany the adult choir at rehearsals or on Sunday mornings in
the absence of the primary accompanist
