The United Methodist Commitee on Relief (UMCOR) approved an emergency grant in response to Super Typhoon Haiyan, a category 5 storm, which barreled through the Philippines on Friday, November 8. The $97,000 grant will provide emergency food, water, and water purification tablets to 7,500 individuals (or 1,500 families) in Tacloban City, Leyte Province, an area worst hit by the typhoon.  To ensure that food is delivered in a timely fashion, it has been UMCOR’s s... NEW YORK (UMNS) —Typhoon Haiyan, possibly the strongest storm ever to make landfall, battered the Philippines Friday, Nov. 8. With sustained winds of 195 mph, the category 5 storm cut a swath of devastation across the northern tip of Cebu and tore through the three large island provinces of Samar, Leyte and Bohol. Congress will once again have to address several tax laws at the end of 2013 that are not only beneficial for the donor as a tax deduction but the charity as well. One of those laws is related to distributions from an IRA to a charity. Unless it is extended, it will expire December 31, 2013. Located in Springfield, Ohio, a city northeast of Dayton whose economy has seen better days, Faith United Methodist Church (UMC) was born from a merger of three churches, Central, Story-Hypes, and Lagonda UMC.  With over 28 buildings to maintain, Camp Wesley Director Heather Brake is very appreciative when West Ohio United Methodist church groups come to visit and help out. This summer several congregations provided construction help by improving and in many cases rebuilding four decks on the main dining hall.
