Cookers Club Boosts Self-Esteem of Community Youth

In Clinton County, Ohio, opportunities for local extracurricular activities for youth remain limited. Clarksville United Methodist Church has established the Young Cookers Club to address this need, serving individuals ages 9-17.

The club has thus far conducted three successful instructional sessions, teaching participants to prepare dishes such as chicken carbonara with mixed salad, sushi (by request), and pasta salad. The most recent session focused on promoting healthy choices for the back-to-school season, featuring breakfast recipes including egg muffins, smoothies, and chocolate chip energy balls.

Alicia Chaney, leader and instructor of the club, stated, “The objective of the Young Cookers Club is to equip children and adolescents with the skills necessary to confidently navigate the kitchen. In addition to fostering self-assurance, these abilities can enhance family engagement as young participants prepare meals at home and cultivate friendships within the classroom environment.”

The Young Cookers Club receives ongoing support from Clarksville UMC and local community members through food and supply donations. Numerous volunteers also contribute their time and work alongside program participants.

Chaney added, “We are optimistic that the program will continue to expand and enable us to offer additional classes in the coming years. I aspire to launch a program for children aged 5–8 by 2026.”
