"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future" (Jeremiah 29:11). In one of the poorest countries in the world, the DR Congo, hundreds of children become orphaned every day due to disease and poverty. These children have a precarious future unless others extend hope and care. Although the term 'orphan' elicits compassion among those of us in the church, it is a demeaning label for children in Africa. In a place where family is central to one's identity, being without a family limits future possibilities. The United Methodist Church in North Katanga seeks to redeem each child living at the Kamina Children's Home from the limitations of this label - shaping and supporting them to be leaders of villages and the Church.
