A Word of Thanks
Dear friends in Christ Jesus:
Thou that hast given so much to me,
Give one thing more, a grateful heart…
Not thankful, when it pleaseth me;
As if thy blessings had spare days:
But such a heart, whose pulse may be
(George Herbert 1592-1633)
I am so pleased to be back in the proverbial saddle after some precious time spent with my Dad, Reverend Herbert Edward Palmer (1925-2021), during a brief illness. On June 22 he “took his flight” as he often said of others who died; his membership now is in the Church Triumphant. A beautiful Service of Death and Resurrection was held in Philadelphia, PA on June 29. Most of this you already knew.
What is most important for you to hear today is signaled in the quote that began this piece. Cynthia joins me in saying to all of you thank you for your outpouring of love, care and support during this time of loss and grief. All of the members of our family experienced the overflow of your graciousness and generosity. You extended and continue to extend yourselves toward us. Your cards, emails, calls, texts, flowers, social media posts and physical and virtual presence at the homegoing service were over the top. We are humbled.
God is God, God is faithful, and as a friend reminded me in a text on June 29, God can be trusted. Now lest you think I am sinking into syrupy Christian cliches let me assure you, I am not. I know these things to be true because I have experienced them in real time on terra firma through you.
Gratefully in Christ,
† Bishop Gregory V. Palmer
