The West Ohio Conference continues to partner with the Laos Mission Initiative in supporting the Lao Samphan Methodist Church. Ministry efforts in community and congregational development offer God’s love and grace to many in Laos who may never have known it before.
During the government-imposed lockdown due to the coronavirus, many vulnerable groups in rural areas were left without medical care. Church leadership worked together to distribute health kits and food packs for 941 families across seven provinces.
The Laos Mission Initiative has started a youth program to provide a safe space for young people to talk about pressing social issues, while also offering sports, training, and English classes. The program is offered every Sunday after the Hmong worship in the university belt in Dondok. The goal of the youth center is to create a holistic social and spiritual transformation among young people.
Linworth UMC in West Ohio has created an initiative to encourage Lao women who wish to join the ministry. Funding is a challenge for Lao women who enter the course of study program to become local pastors. Seeded by generous gifts from Ohio’s United Methodist Clergywomen (West and East Ohio), the fund for supporting Lao women in ministry is at almost $1,000.
