Toledo Wesley UMC makes disciples & meets needs

Effectively reaching new people for Christ is the hallmark of West Ohio’s Light of the World award, given to one church from each district that demonstrates a commitment to shine the light of God’s love into their community. This year’s winner from the Maumee Watershed District is Toledo Wesley United Methodist Church.

Led by Rev. Waverly Earley, Toledo Wesley United Methodist Church is a 130-year-old congregation of 70 members that worships about 25 on Sundays. Located in a low-income urban area in the Old North End of Toledo, most of their ministries center around the mission of "Making Disciples and Meeting Needs.”

In addition to a large food and clothing pantry open on Saturday mornings, other ministries include sending elementary children to Camp Wesley each summer, providing school supplies during an outdoor worship and potluck, an addiction support group, a harvest party for neighborhood children, Christmas baskets for those in need, collecting personal items for a women’s shelter, and a reentry ministry for returning citizens.

“This congregation loves to sing praises to God and works hard to be the hands and feet of Jesus!” says Rev. Earley. Toledo Wesley went from 0 baptisms and professions of faith in 2018 to 3 in 2019. Congratulations, Toledo Wesley UMC, for receiving this year’s Light of the World award for the Maumee Watershed District!
