Five West Ohio Deaconesses Consecrated at UWF Assembly

Thousands of women gathered in Orange County, Florida for the United Women in Faith Women’s Assembly on May 20-22, 2022. Under the theme, Turn it Up, this event was filled with community service, worship, fellowship and strategies for new ways faith-filled women can make a difference in the world.

On Friday, five West Ohio Deaconesses were consecrated by Bishop Tracy Smith Malone at Assembly. Jody Harter Stevens, Cheryl Bender, Beth Vanoli, Katelin Hansen, and Kris Frantz-Shoaf were 5 of 60 deaconesses and Home Missioners consecrated by the Bishop of the Ohio East Area.

Deaconesses (and home missioners, who are the male equivalent) are laity “called by God to a lifetime relationship in The United Methodist Church for engagement with a full-time vocation in ministries of love, justice and service.” They are social workers, counselors, teachers, nurses, artists, administrators and many other vocations of service.
