Canaanville ERT develops an Early Response Team

When four Canaanville UMC members attended a West Ohio Conference Early Response Team training in 2017, they didn’t know what God had in store for them. Soon after becoming certified, the team was called out to do flood relief cleanup after the February 2018 flood in Marietta, Ohio. Six members helped clean out damaged drywall, appliances, and cabinets from the home of a family who had no flood insurance. Excited by this work, more Canaanville members became ERT certified and a volunteer team was added. The church team now has 17 members, eight of them certified ERTs.

It was suggested that to be prepared to respond immediately to emergencies, it would be beneficial to have a trailer for supplies, tools and equipment. After discussion that the team could also use the trailer to respond to community needs, the name “Early Response Team /Community Response Team” was chosen. The church decided to purchase an 8.5- by 16-foot cargo trailer to serve this purpose.
