In a Press Release January 14, Bishop Gregory V. Palmer announced that The Reverend Brent Watson will be appointed a conference superintendent and assigned to the Shawnee Valley District of the West Ohio Conference of The United Methodist Church, effective July 1, 2013. Watson will follow the Rev. Dr. Joseph Bishman who is retiring.
According to Bishop Palmer, “It has been a privilege to work alongside Pastor Bishman and experience his contagious missional energy. Joseph’s single minded pursuit of the mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world inspires and challenges us all. “
The new conference leader, Brent Watson, is currently serving as the Assistant to the Superintendent in the Foothills District in the West Ohio Conference. As the Superintendent for the Shawnee Valley District, Watson will have spiritual and administrative oversight for 175 congregations and numerous mission sites and ministries in nine counties in southern Ohio, including the Portsmouth metro area. He will also become a member of the Bishop’s Appointive Cabinet, assisting in the appointment of all pastors in the West Ohio Conference.
Watson completed his undergraduate degree at Bowling Green State University and his theological education at Asbury Theological Seminary, where he received his Master of Divinity (M. Div.) degree. He was ordained an elder and became a full member of the conference in 1984 and served as pastor in churches in Brown, Morgan and Ross Counties in southern Ohio.
In his current position, Rev. Watson has focused much time and energy on the many small churches in his district, supporting their efforts to be vibrant and vital congregations. He has a passion for empowering the laity for ministry and leadership.
“Pastor Watson is deeply grounded in Christ, a person of prayer, a seasoned servant leader committed to equipping lay and clergy alike for relevant 21st century ministry,” stated Bishop Palmer. “He has a unique understanding of the context that is the Shawnee Valley District and he will add much to the team of conference superintendents – the cabinet.”
Rev. Watson is married to Susie and has two married adult children and one grandchild.
