Cincinnati Residents Still in Need After Flash Floods

Residents in the Norwood and St. Bernard areas of Cincinnati are still in need of assistance following the flash floods of August 28. On that day, 4.4 inches of rain fell in two hours, damaging 708 homes. Since no federal emergency was declared, all repairs and recovery will be completed using donations and volunteers. One place that was hit especially hard is the Hillcrest Elderly apartments, a senior living facility for anyone over age 62. A local non-profit furniture bank has been collecting items to help these seniors as they move back into their apartments. Below is a list of items needed (new or gently used) for each of the remaining 33 houseware kits:

  • Cookware Set – 9-piece nonstick set
  • Silverware Set – 20-piece flatware set
  • Cooking/Baking Utensils – 14-piece cooking tool/gadget (measuring cups/spoons)
  • Bath Towel Set – 6-piece set includes 2 each of bath, hand and wash cloths
  • Bathroom mat/waste basket/shower curtain
  • Blanket for full size bed & pillow
  • Kitchen Towel/Oven Mitt & Pot Holder Set
  • Kitchen waste basket
  • Telephone - corded basic phone for land line (residents need “life alert”)
  • Toaster
  • Coffee Maker
  • Radio/Alarm Clock
  • Lamps - at least 2 for each resident (1 for bedroom and 1 for living room)
  • Broom/Dust Pan/Mop

Other items that would be helpful are televisions, cleaning supplies, hygiene products, and small vacuums. Donations may be dropped off at the New Life Furniture warehouse, 11431 Williamson Rd. Cincinnati, OH 45241, Monday-Friday from 8:30am-4:30pm. Volunteers are also needed to help sort through the donations and assemble the houseware kits. Volunteers are welcome Monday-Friday anytime between 9:00 am-3:00 pm through December 15 at the New Life warehouse. Help will also be needed to move furniture into each of the apartments and unpack housewares on Saturday, December 10, from 9:00 am-Noon or Friday, December 16, from 9:00 am-3:00 pm. Call 513-313-0530 to volunteer or for more information.
