Greetings Sisters and Brothers in Jesus Christ:Glad tidings of the season. It has been my prayer that the days of Advent and Christmastide would open us all to a deepened engagement with the God who became flesh in Jesus Christ. I trust it has been so. In a few short hours we will pray the new year in. I have vivid recollections of many New Year's Eve nights spent in church. These memories cover a wide span from childhood to more recent years. The constant acro... (read more)

Dear ones in Christ Jesus:Fat Tuesday is behind us and we begin another Lenten pilgrimage. You may be observing this season by laying aside or laying down certain habits or practices. You have my encouragement, prayers and support if this is a part of your approach to this season of reflection. Historically fasting among the people of God is one of those “in order that” kind of practices. So if you feel called or compelled to fast, to cease and desist from some... (read more)

Beloved in Christ Jesus:After several hours of being disconnected from news reports today I just sat down (8:00 PM EST December 20, 2014) to catch up. I am tuned in to what you may have been following for several hours, the focus of which is Brooklyn. I am heartsick and crestfallen yet again the vicious cycle of violence holds sway. More lives lost. In the line of duty, in domestic violence, through suicide. There will be more empty chairs at meal tables this w... (read more)

December 11, 2014Beloved in Christ Jesus:Greetings again in these Advent days of watching and waiting.I want to pick up where I left off in my December 1st love note to you. About halfway through this note I am going to ask you for a very specific action. You may recall my commendation of you for the remarkable ways that you are being church by opening your hearts and lives and reaching into your local communities in response to gun violence. December 1, 2014Advent greetings beloved.Thanksgiving 2014 is over with all of the attendant opportunities for great consumption. Whatever needs we have for over-consumption that are not satisfied at the table, the in-person and cyber shopping opportunities are there to pick up the slack. We think it is about the food and the stuff but it is really about relationships and the opportunity to deepen them. And to the extent that we had plenty to eat over the Thanks... (read more)

Dear friends in Christ Jesus:I spent November 2-7 in Oklahoma City where the Council of Bishops (COB) met. It was a long haul but I rejoice that at every turn it was bathed in prayer and worship. We engaged in worshipful work. Our first engagement together was a Eucharistic Memorial service where we remembered with thanksgiving the bishops and spouses who have joined the church triumphant since we met a year ago. The gavel was passed to Bishop Warner Brown as P... (read more)
