Bishop Palmer's Leadership Clinics
May 9 | 10-12 EST | Father Greg Boyle
The Whole Language: The Power of Extravagant Tenderness
Father Gregory Boyle, the beloved Jesuit priest and author of the inspirational bestsellers, Tattoos on the Heart and Barking to the Choir, will share a call to witness the transformative power of tenderness, rooted in his lifetime of experience counseling gang members in Los Angeles. In a community struggling to overcome systemic poverty and violence, Father Greg will share how those at Homeboy Industries fight despair and remain generous, hopeful, and tender. His leadership and moving stories challenge our ideas about God and about people, providing a window into a world filled with fellowship, compassion, and fewer barriers. Through encouragement, humor, and hope, Father Greg will show us how to treat others—and ourselves—with acceptance and tenderness.
Bishop’s Huddle-Up (a time to process together): May 16, 7-8pm EST
Author’s Book included and mailed to you: The Whole Language: The Power of Extravagant Tenderness
BIO: Jesuit priest and New York Times bestselling author, Father Greg Boyle over time witnessed the devastating impact of gang violence in his Los Angeles community during the “decade of death” that began in the late 1980’s and peaked at 1000 gang-related killings in 1992. Father Greg’s discontent spurred him to lead change and in 1988 he started what would eventually become Homeboy Industries. Homeboy Industries employs and trains former gang members in a range of social enterprises, as well as provides critical services to thousands of men and women who walk through its doors every year seeking a better life. Father Boyle has written bestsellers “Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion,” “Barking to the Choir: The Power of Radical Kinship,” and recently “The Whole Language: The Power of Extravagant Tenderness.” Father Greg has received the California Peace Price and been inducted into the California Hall of Fame. In 2014, President Obama named Father Boyle a Champion of Change. He received the University of Notre Dame’s 2017 Laetare Medal, the oldest honor given to American Catholics. Currently, he serves as a committee member of California’s Economic and Job Recovery Task Force as a response to Covid-19.
