Executive Director, Council on Development

Mission Statement for the Council on Development
The mission of the Council on Development (COD) is to inform, counsel, and encourage individuals and congregations to respond to Jesus Christ with wise financial decisions and, when appropriate, to assist in making outright and deferred gifts to the ministries of The United Methodist Church.
Reporting Relationship
The Executive Director of the COD reports to the Bishop of the West Ohio Conference.
Job Scope
The Executive Director will represent the mission of the COD to West Ohio Conference committees, agencies, congregations and individual members. The Executive Director will articulate a long-term stewardship theology that honors God and will provide tools of implementation for the purpose of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. The Executive Director will set aggressive goals, supervise the COD staff, and advise the COD in order to achieve stated goals.
Specific Duties
50% Fund Development
- Lead the fundraising efforts in support of Conference initiatives including cultivating and soliciting leadership donors for the Conference.
- Presentations to local church groups and other Conference gatherings in promotion of gifts to the Conference and local churches.
- Along with the COD members, will set annual goals for outright and deferred gifts for the COD at the Conference level.
30% Field representation
- Meet with local clergy and their churches to assist in their overall church investment stewardship and planned giving efforts.
- Provide local programs to churches where appropriate.
- Participate in denominational and national groups for continual update as well as gaining resources from other areas of the country.
- Participate as a member of the extended cabinet for the Bishop of the West Ohio Conference.
- Participate in the Annual Conference leadership team.
- Other West Ohio Conference appropriate responsibilities.
20% Administration
- Supervise the COD staff and manage COD office functions.
- Support the COD Board and its committees in their work.
- Administer the COD’s program involving endowment services and other appropriate programs.
- Monitor compliance with legal and tax requirements.
Qualifications Required
- Active Christian background with openness to sharing personal faith statement.
- Hands-on experience in soliciting and closing major current and deferred gifts.
- Demonstrated leadership ability.
- Strong communication and personnel relationship building skills.
- Demonstrated experience and activity in working with a diversified population.
- Good public speaking skills.
- Education background appropriate to the tasks of the position.
Qualifications Desired
United Methodist with a good working knowledge of the polity and traditions of The United Methodist Church.
Salary and Benefits
Salary/housing combined package in the range of $95,000 - $100,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience. A benefits package is also provided.
