Casa de Misericordia (House of Mercy)

The Casa de Misericordia orphanage is directed by Pastor Miguel de Leon with support from American missionaries David and Karen Smith and house parents Ricardo and Karla Traconis. It is located outside Piedras Negras, just across the border from Eagle Pass, TX about three hours southwest of San Antonio.

The casa is currently home to 35 children who are placed there by the government when their parents are no longer able to care for them. Some of these children will eventually be reunited with their families while others are adopted. Some will stay until they are ready to go out on their own. Since opening its doors in 2003, Casa de Misericordia has sheltered over 150 children on a budget of about US$10,000 per month.

Mission teams from the West Ohio Conference assist with construction projects and enjoy games and activities with the children. The most important gift you can give is one of presence.

Templo Aleluya

Templo Aleluya is a Methodist church pastored by Hector Aguirre. Under his leadership, this congregation provides food and clothing to some of the poorest families in Mexico. The church’s caretaker drives a van into the nearby colonia every weekday and brings 80 children to the church for breakfast and devotions. The church, with assistance from American congregations, is building a kindergarten addition and an elementary school nearby. In the meantime, the school-age children are transported to the public school. These children would not attend school if not for this ministry provide by the church.

If you would like to learn more about these partnerships, please contact Sharon Wiles. If you have already made the decision to travel to Piedras Negras, Scott Vaughan will assist you in your planning and coordination with Pastor Miguel or Pastor Hector. Here is a planning document that might aid you in your preparations.
