Letter from Bishop Ough
Bishop Ough invites people to make a financial contribution to support recovery efforts in Moscow Ohio and other affected areas. He invites all of us to pray and see how we can be the love of Christ in Action. Read his letter to us by clicking here. Consider your gift of love and mercy.

Harrisburg, IL Recovery

South West Texas Conference
Long Term Recovery efforts due to the Fall 2011 Wildfires have been organized. Teams can stay at the ecumenical Faith Village Volunteer Acommodation Center for $20 per person per night. Register your team on-line.  for more information, contact Margery Marshall at disasterresponse@umcad.org; 775-848-0766

As we engage in disaster response, it is always the survivors to determine what is needed and the extent of the response.  Leaders in Moscow were reluctant to allow outside volunteers in
until after homeowners had a chance to be present and go through their possession. Although this takes more time, it does empower survivors to lead their own recovery.  Below is a summary of what is happening now and how the United Methodist Church is present.

West Ohio Provides Case Management with Tornado Survivors
Bev Hurlburt, member of Wayne Street UMC in St. Mary's, Ohio, is providing case management to people affected by the March 2 tornados. Funding for her position has been provided through an UMCOR grant received by West Ohio. As the case manager, Bev will work with survivors as they recover from the damage afflicted by the tornado. Gifts you have given to the West OHio disaster account will assist these survivors to meet rebuilding needs not provided through insurance and other resources. Your continued generosity will provide healing and restoration for many.

A family in Adams county has already moved into new housing thanks to the work of Bev.  Please keep Bev and affected communities in your prayers.

Below you will find ways in which you can help.

Pray

Consider holding a prayer service for the many communities affected by the tornado in Ohio and across the country.  Remember local congregations who themselves are affected and yet seek to provide the presence of God's love within their community.  Remember community, church and state leaders who are working around the clock to provide the best response possible. Pray that we will have the capacity and resilience to provide a ministry of accompaniment and recovery for those affected physically, emotionally and spiritually.

Make flood buckets that can be stored in West Ohio to assist our neighbors when the next disaster happens.

Contact one of West Ohio Flood Bucket District Storage Sites to make arrangements to make and deliver flood buckets. Items that need to go in a flood bucket are listed below.

Assembly Directions
Place all liquid items in the bucket first. Place remaining items in the bucket fitting them around and between the liquid items. Sponges, scouring pads, clothespins and trash bags can be separated in order to fit all of the items in the bucket. Ensure the lid is closed securely.

Important Notes
All items must be new except for the actual bucket and lid. All cleaning agents must be liquid and in plastic containers. No powders please. If you cannot find the requested size of a liquid item, use a smaller size. Including larger sizes of any item will prevent the lid from sealing.

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) provides long-term recovery as well as immediate relief. Recognizing that disasters cause disruptions that can last for years and often create permanent changes in people's lives, UMCOR works within a community to address the long-term effects of a disaster and assist people in rebuilding and adjusting to change. The United Methodist Church responds by sending Volunteer Teams to help rebuild communities and individuals' lives for as long as it takes.
