Devastating Flood in Monterrey Mexico

….Hurricane Alex has devastated Monterrey Mexico. The Methodist Church, under the leadership of Bishop Raul Garcia, is responding to the needs of their neighbors. Pastor Jesus Elizondo, Director of Social Support, has asked for help in creating food baskets. Each food basket costs $10. Their immediate need is of 100 food baskets. Any contributions can be sent to West Ohio Conference, designated Mexico Flood. The Methodist Church will be responding to this disaster for a long time. Please keep them and the people in your prayers as they seek to recover from this disaster. To give you a sense of damage Alex has created, please see the attached. In all things, remember that the church exists to bring healing and restoration. Together we can help our partners in Mexico be that sacred healing presence in their communities. Methodist work in Mexico began in 1871 when a young Mexican was converted to Methodism in the USA and returned to his country to share his new faith. The Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and the Methodist Episcopal Church followed in 1873, sending missionaries to explore possibilities and establish congregations. In 1930, Methodism in Mexico became united and the Methodist Church in Mexico was born as an autonomous church.

The West Ohio Conference partners with the Mexico Oriental Conference, located on the Gulf of Mexico and bordering Texas, to support iniatives such as the Casa de Misericordia orphanage and Templo Aleluya Methodist Church. VIM teams often travel to the Mexico Oriental Conference to work at the orphanage or the Nuevo Progreso clinic.
