Written: 3/5/2007

From Bishop Ough

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Rev. Joseph Bishman as the Shawnee Valley District Superintendent, effective November 1, 2007.  As you know, Joseph will follow Rev. David Brown whom I have appointed co-pastor, along with Rev. Elizabeth Brown, of Normandy United Methodist Church in Dayton.

Rev. Bishman is currently serving as senior pastor of Shawnee United Methodist Church in Lima, Ohio.  Under Joseph's leadership the congregation has developed a number of innovative outreach ministries and extensive mission work in northwest Ohio and Haiti.

Rev. Bishman is a graduate of the Methodist Theological School in Ohio.  He also has a Master’s degree in counseling from Ohio University and a Doctor of Ministry degree in Pastoral Counseling from Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus.  Joseph has over thirty years of experience as a pastor in the West Ohio Conference including appointments in southern Ohio at Central Avenue United Methodist Church in Athens and Williamsburg United Methodist Church.

Rev. Bishman is a strong visionary and transformational leader.  He is an exceptional teacher and coach, with a passion for mentoring other pastors.  He will bring a wealth of experience, a vibrant spirituality and love of Jesus Christ, a strong sense of integrity, and abundant energy to this ministry with the congregations and pastors of the Shawnee Valley District.

Joseph is married to Marty, currently a teacher of cosmetology at Vantage Career Center in Van Wert, Ohio.  They have two children, Joe, who lives in Naples, Florida with his wife Melissa, and Erica, who makes her home in Cincinnati with husband, Todd, and their children, Sidney and Samuel.

I encourage you to begin, even now, to pray for Joseph and Marty as they prepare to come to live and serve among you. There will, of course, be opportunities for you to meet and become better acquainted with the Bishmans later this fall.  Continue your prayers, as well, for the Browns during this upcoming season of transition.

May God bless your work and witness for Christ's sake in each of your respective places of kingdom endeavor.
