The 44th of the West Ohio Annual Conference has come to a close, and we hope you found your time at Lakeside rewarding, spiritually fulfilling, and inspirational. We have much to celebrate in West Ohio and much to be thankful for. This first annual conference with our new bishop, Gregory V. Palmer, gave all of us another opportunity to witness what an inspiring leader and preacher he is.

On this, the final morning of the West Ohio Annual Conference, the week’s attendees came together to enjoy Christian fellowship, hear a final powerful message from Bishop Palmer, a third teaching from Biblical Scholar Elaine Robinson, finish some business and bring this year’s session to its conclusion.

In the early morning on Tuesday, the third day of the 2013 West Ohio Annual Conference Session, over 300 runners and walkers, as well as several supporters and observers, gathered in downtown Lakeside for the 2nd annual 5k run/walk. Bishop Palmer was in attendance to pray and start them on their course that would crisscross through the streets, shore and trails of the Lakeside campus. Monday marked the second day of West Ohio Conference events at Lakeside, but the first official day of the conference session, beginning with worship, and after opening the session, led to teaching, legislation and recognition of accomplishments throughout West Ohio. The sidewalks were lined with attendees walking under umbrellas throughout the day, which was punctuated by gray, but life-giving late spring rain clouds.

Arriving at Lakeside, the streets buzzed with activity as West Ohio Conference members were preparing for the first day of the 44th annual conference session. Teams rehearsed and polished the stage set, microphones, instruments and lighting in broad Hoover Auditorium, whose seats would soon be filled with faces from across the conference. On Sunday, some 24 tornadoes tore through five states—Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, and Illinois—and destroyed 300 homes and claimed lives.
On Monday another tornado touched down in the city of Moore, Oklahoma, destroying two primary schools, a hospital, and an as yet untold number of homes in the town. Conflicting reports set the death toll at 21 or more, many children are among the lives claimed.

After a two year campaign that has to date raised over $2.1M and involved United Methodists from across our global denomination, blessing events celebrating and commissioning the new Wings of the Morning Cessna Caravan airplane took place in the West Ohio Conference this week.

United Methodists have long advocated for just and humane immigration reform that includes a pathway to full citizenship with minimal obstacles so that the pathway can be open to all undocumented immigrants and so that the pathway can be effective, orderly, and humane. Rev. Thomas Rand has been appointed the new assistant to the Superintendent of the Maumee Watershed District by Bishop Gregory V. Palmer, effective July 1, 2013. Rev. Rand comes to the Maumee Watershed District from Concord United Methodist Church in Englewood.
