“If you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday. The LORD will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame” (Isaiah 58:10-11). For those who go hungry in Kamina, a nutrition center has been formed to meet their immediate need. Fifty mothers and children line up outside this center to receive food. Meals contain corn flour, beans, sugar, salt, milk, and more, depending on what is available. They provide nutrition that would not otherwise be found. “I am trying to help children who are malnourished. This is my responsibility…We feed them food that nourishes their body, protects them from sickness, gives them energy, and strengthens them,” says the center’s nutrition director. Children sing while they wait their turn, then dig in once their bowls have been filled. The center monitors the children’s health by weighing them to keep track of their growth and strength.
